Governors’ Pen Pictures

Simon Cuthbert
I am Chairman of the Curriculum and Achievement (C&A) Committee. This Committee scrutinises the core aspects of teaching and learning, in addition to monitoring the performance of the school in terms of its exam results and student progress against targets. This Committee also reviews curriculum areas, receiving regular presentations from Heads of Department in order for all Governors to develop a close understanding of the curriculum thus ensuring we are able to raise relevant issues with the Senior Leadership Team.

I have been on the Chiltern Edge Governing body for over 10 years as a Community Governor, and I am also Deputy Principal at the Henley College where many Chiltern Edge students go to further their studies post 16 at either A level, or by undertaking a vocational course. I have lived in Reading for the last 30 years but grew up in Yorkshire and still support Leeds United despite the travails of the last few years!

Mrs Pauline Conway (Acting Chair of Governors)
I started as a Parent Governor as my daughter attended Chiltern Edge School. Since then I have continuously served as an governor. I worked on both the Children Family and Community Committee and the Resource Committee, as well as serving as Vice Chair to the Governors. I was then elected as a Co-opted Governor by the board . I took over as Acting Chair in July 2014, since when I have attended all the major committees.

I took the decision to retire early in 2010 to commit more time to my family; previously I worked for a major bank for 33 years. Prior to retirement I worked as a Head of Sales Support in Corporate Banking. This gave me extensive skills in people management and HR. I also had responsibility for graduate recruitment, governance, premises and local financial budget. I have therefore chosen committees where I can use these skills to support the school. During my career I worked in many areas of the bank, including retail, premier and small business sectors. During this time I also gained a great deal of experience in customer service, sales and staff training.

I also volunteer for FISH, a local charity providing support to the elderly or people unable to get out unaided.

Ian McGowan
I was appointed as an Associate member of the Governing Body in July 2012, and then voted as a Parent Governor in April 2014. I am Chair of the Resources & Finance Committee, with additional responsibility as the Governor responsible for Health and Safety. My eldest son attended the school and very much enjoyed the experience, and my younger son is currently in Year 8.

I have spent over 25 years working in business development, mainly in the outsourcing & technology sectors. This has given me experience of managing multiple teams of staff, plus having overall P&L budget responsibility for several mid-size businesses. I help manage two local youth Rugby & Football Teams, which keeps me fit and my interests are in sport and current affairs. I also sit on a Committee of the Sonning Parish Council to plan the future Sport & Recreational facilities for the village.

Helen Beville
Hello. I am Helen Beville, the current Chair of the Children, Family & Community Committee of the Governing Body. We look at students’ behaviour and attendance, safeguarding, parents’ feedback, and any issues which impact on our students, their families, our partner schools and the communities our students come from.

I am a Parent Governor who joined Chiltern Edge Governing Body in April 2016. I am a qualified Nursery Nurse and used to manage a Day Nursery in Henley before having our first child. In the time that my children have been growing up, I have worked in local Pre-Schools and was employed as a Teaching Assistant at Kidmore End Primary School. I have worked on a number of different committees fundraising for extra equipment that the schools and preschools can benefit from. I am currently joint chair of CESA (Chiltern Edge School Association).

At present, I am supporting my husband in his local Estate Agency business. I am a keen sportsperson who still enjoys playing netball, running and Pilates.
