Language Specialism

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”

Nelson Mandela.

Here at Chiltern Edge we recognise that we live in an ever changing global society. As such the ability to communicate in a foreign language has never been more important. We aim to equip our students with the skills necessary to compete in an increasingly competitive global market place, and also to enable them to become global citizens. Our status as a Language College has given us the opportunity to focus on the language learning needs of our students whilst at the same time allowing them to gain an understanding of other cultures.

We are very proud of the fact that many of our students study a Modern Foreign Language at KS4. Students have the opportunity to study French, German or both languages. Students in KS3 also have the opportunity to participate in a Spanish club as an enrichment activity.

Chiltern Edge firmly believes in supporting and promoting language learning, and much work has been done by the Primary Schools coordinator to support the delivery of the MFL strategy in our feeder primary schools, as well as providing high quality training and support to Primary colleagues. Another member of the MFL department teaches Spanish weekly to students in Bishopswood Special School, enabling them to experience language learning and gain some intercultural understanding about life in Spain.

The International coordinator has helped to promote an International ethos within the school. Students have gained greater global awareness through our very successful “Africa” and “South America” weeks which have permeated the curriculum. We also encourage students to experience life in another European country at first hand by participating in a variety of study trips and exchanges.
