“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
- Nelson Mandela

Here at Chiltern Edge we recognise that we live in an ever changing global society. As such the ability to communicate in a foreign language has never been more important. We aim to equip our students with the skills necessary to compete in an increasingly competitive global market place, and also to enable them to become global citizens. The Modern Foreign Languages Department is situated in a suite of classrooms including an ICT room equipped and resourced specifically for the use of the department.

Key Stage 3
In Year 7 all students study French and tare taught in mixed ability groups. In Years 8 and 9 the majority of students study two foreign languages: French and German, with two hours of each language per fortnight. In year 9 most students will continue with both French and German, with the others continuing with just one language. During Key Stage 3 students will develop and apply their grammatical knowledge through the use of engaging activities and authentic resources in order to communicate successfully, and will learn how to deal with everyday situations such as shopping, ordering snacks in a café, asking for directions. They will also gain a greater understanding of foreign cultures and customs. Students have a weekly homework during Key Stage 3, and we monitor progress through half-termly End of Unit tests.

Key Stage 4
Students can opt to continue their language studies to GCSE, either taking French, German or both languages. We currently follow the Edexcel examination board for both languages. Students continue to develop their skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as they work through topics including free time and sport, media and culture, the environment, new technologies, education, careers and future plans and visiting a foreign country (travel, services, shopping and weather). Throughout Years 10 and 11 students take Controlled Assessments in Speaking and Writing. In May of Year 11 students sit external Listening and Reading exams set by Edexcel.

Extra – curricular activites
The Department offers a range of extra-curricular activities. In Spring of Year 7 all students have the opportunity to go on a day trip to Boulogne. The school has a long standing 12 day exchange with the Gesamtschule Hollfeld which is offered to Year 9 students. In addition to these trips the department hosts Eurovision@ChilternEdge as part of the celebrations for the European Week of Languages, and hosts visiting teachers from China.

Year 9 Options:
We would strongly advise students to continue with a Modern Foreign Language at GCSE.
